Buffer management and flow control in the Credit Net ATM host interface

چکیده
Among the many benefits of ATM networking are the potential for connections with negotiated quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees and application-specific data management at network endpoints. In this paper we describe the architecture of a PCI bus host adapter for OC-3 and OC-12 ATM, focusing on challenges in the areas of buffer management and flow control, since these are vital to realizing the bandwidth and QoS potential of ATM endpoint hosts.

Credit-Based Flow Control for ATM Networks
In credit-based flow control for ATM networks, switch buffer space is first allocated to each virtual circuit (VC) and then credit control is applied to the VC to prevent possible buffer overflow. Adaptive buffer allocation improves sharing by allowing dynamic allocation of buffer space to multiple VCs sharing the same buffer pool. This paper gives an overview of credit flow control and present...
متن کاملAnalysis and Dimensioning of Credit-based Flow Control for the Abr Service in Atm Networks
ATM networks have shown to reveal difficulties in simultaneously guaranteeing the requested Quality-of-Service while efficiently utilizing all the available bandwidth for economic reasons. The ABR (available bit rate) service class was designed to fill the gap of bandwidth with less delay but loss sensitive traffic. Due to the bursty nature of higher-priority traffic and the resulting bandwidth...
متن کاملRate-based Scheme for Atm Flow Control
ATM is representative of the connection-oriented resource provisioning class of protocols. The ATM network is expected to provide end-to-end QoS guarantees to connections in the form of bounds on delays, errors and/or losses. Performance management in ATM network depend upon different parameters. ABR flow control is one of the important parameter for performance management. In this paper, we sh...
متن کاملClosed Loop Credit-Based Flow Control with Internal Backpressure in Input and Output Queued Switches
A credit-based flow control scheme is very effective for handling cells of the ABR or Controlled Transfer service class in ATM networks. The properties of immediate ramp-up after congestion and the impossibility of buffer overflow by construction are what makes this method very attractive. For best results, many switches along the route must support flow control, acting as virtual source/destin...
متن کاملExperimental Evaluation of ATM Congestion Control Mechanisms
Tt is widely believed that closed-loop per-VC flow control is needed to effectively deal with congestion for ABR traffic in ATM networks. The many ATM flow control mechanisms that have been proposed can be divided in two classes. A first class consists of roundtrip-based rate control algorithms in which a source selects a transmit rate for each VC, based on feedback from the switches along its ...
